Seasonal ingredients, but at what cost?
Twyla Campbell talks about seasonal eating and the food affordability crisis

The Edmonton Downtown Farmers Market (previously located at 10305 97 Street) hosted over 60 small farms and food businesses. Canadian author and former CBC Edmonton AM’s restaurant reviewer Twyla Campbell was among those present at the market last fall to celebrate the launch of her latest cookbook, PRAIRIE, which focuses on seasonal eating — a type of cuisine that uses only seasonal ingredients and limits food waste. Seasonal eating supports a nutritious diet favouring in-season ingredients from local vendors and farmers.
Campbell believes Albertans are being forced to compromise their diet in order to afford necessities such as shelter and utilities.
“A lot of people will buy cheaper food so that they can afford their rent,” she says. “It comes down to dollars and cents.”
Canadians are feeling the impact of inflation more than ever — and their eating habits are proof. Due to the increase in food pricing, food quality is among the priorities people are cutting back on in 2024. According to Food Banks Alberta, one in five Albertans is experiencing food insecurity caused by growing costs of living and nutrition.
Campbell adds that Western Canadians can sustainably avoid high grocery prices by supporting local, small-scale farmers and maintaining a seasonal-based diet. But she recognizes that affording in-season foods isn’t always realistic for all.
“People just gotta do what they gotta do, and that’s survival,” says Campbell, iterating the importance of not judging or criticizing others' food habits.
