Ramadan is a sacred time for Muslims worldwide, marked by fasting, prayer, and reflection. In 2025, Ramadan is expected to begin on the evening of February 28 and end on the evening of March 29, depending on the sighting of the moon. During this holy month, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, breaking their fast with a meal called Iftar. It is a time of spiritual renewal, charity, and community, where families and friends gather to share in the blessings of the season.
For Alberta Avenue, Ramadan is more than a date on the calendar — it’s a time when the neighborhood comes alive. Home to one of Edmonton’s most prominent mosques, Masjid Al Quba, Alberta Avenue becomes a hub for worship and celebration, drawing thousands of visitors weekly. The energy spills over into the streets and businesses, where Muslim-owned establishments play a central role in supporting the community during this special month.
This is the second year of the Ramadan on the Ave Campaign, an initiative by the Alberta Avenue Business Association to celebrate the vibrant contributions of the local Muslim community. Last year, in partnership with Masjid Al Quba and FreshCo Coliseum, the campaign successfully ran a toy drive where over 300 children from the community received gifts, spreading joy and generosity during the holy month.
Building on this success, this year’s campaign will focus on a video project showcasing the amazing businesses that make Alberta Avenue special. The videos will feature everything from halal grocery shopping to festive fashion boutiques and delicious halal restaurants, highlighting the diverse offerings that create a vibrant hub for Ramadan and Eid. This campaign aims to highlight the positive contributions of Muslim-owned businesses to Alberta Avenue’s economic growth and overall community wellness.
So, whether you’re observing Ramadan or just curious to learn more about its traditions, Alberta Avenue invites you to explore, support local businesses, and experience the welcoming spirit of the season.
Ramadan Mubarak
