Board games and books come together at a unique pop-up event where attendees can explore a variety of books, win prizes and find a shared community. The Book Archive, an Edmonton-based bookstore, and Pe Metawe Games, a board game and roleplaying game store, partner to showcase diverse authors and stories on Saturday May 17, from noon to 6 pm at Pe Metawe’s store on 118 Avenue.
One of The Book Archive’s missions is to make unrepresented voices more common in mainstream media. The online store ensures that at least 60 per cent of its inventory showcases marginalized authors and stories.
Logan Collin, co-owner of The Book Archive, sees the upcoming pop-up shop as a great opportunity for Edmontonians to support small businesses in their area.
“I think the draw, especially for this pop-up event, is that you can feel good about supporting two local, independent stores,” Collin says. “I’m queer-owned, and Pe Metawe is Indigenous-owned — two marginalized voices in an often white-dominated industry.”
Attendees of the event can expect many queer, Indigenous, and Asian book authors featured at the pop-up. “You'll see a lot of diverse voices,” adds Collin.
Not only will the event showcase a wide variety of books, but Pe Metawe and The Book archive will offer a door prize with gift cards, and other small prizes.
Pe Metawe Games is known for its public gaming space and community-centred programs. Regularly partnering with local creators and businesses, Pe Metawe is excited to host an event that brings literature and gaming together while supporting the community.
Catherine Little, the operations manager at Pe Metawe Games, is a fan of The Book Archive online store and its mission to make books more accessible to Canadians. She is thrilled to host an event that highlights a variety of voices.
“It's an exciting time to expand the books on your bookshelf,” says Little.
