Many people love a traditional breakfast of bacon and eggs. Now there is another all-day breakfast option on the Avenue.
This week, Green Onion Cake Man started offering an all-day build-your-own breakfast menu. The new addition also came with changed hours: they are now open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“I looked around the Avenue and didn’t see much for breakfast options,” said Siu To from Green Onion Cake Man. “So I figured, why not offer breakfast?”
There are no set breakfasts on the menu. You choose up to six items at $3 each - two eggs any style, two bacon, two sausages, hash brown potatoes, two thick slice pieces of toast, pancakes. A coffee is also $3. Your breakfast plate will come dressed up with a tomato slice.
The new offer joins other inexpensive all-day breakfast options on the Avenue, like Maria’s Place on 83 Street. Now, I will also have an anytime breakfast option just steps away from one of my workplaces which definitely beats grabbing a bag of chips when hunger hits.
And of course, there’s the very tempting green onion cakes, dumplings, hot and sour chicken soup, beef brisket on a bun, Shanghai noodles and a variety of other tasty pan-Asian dishes.

Siu To brought his famous and delicious green onion cakes to Alberta Avenue in 2019, after introducing them to Edmonton in the 1980s. The pan-fried onion cakes, which are a Northern Chinese staple, are made with a simple dough followed by an onion mixture layered on top, then rolled up into a log and twisted and flattened into a pancake.
Despite being in his mid-80s, To is still quite active in his business, which includes local markets and a YouTube channel where he shares instructions on preparing his take-home meals.
When you walk into the restaurant on 118 Ave, you’ll find two lovely Asian ladies. They’ll take your order at the counter and prepare your food. You can choose one of the handful of tables, take the meal home, or head over to the grassy space across the street, St. Faith Park, or Alberta Avenue Park to sit and eat in the sun.
Wherever and whenever you choose to eat, your tummy will be happy with a comforting and delicious breakfast.
