A Delton resident started Parent Connect, a community group looking to connect families in the neighbourhood.
In a community where parents often pass each other without exchanging more than a wave at school drop-off, Jennie Gurnett saw an opportunity to build something more meaningful. Every Monday morning from 8:30 am to 10 am, she spends her time brewing coffee and setting out treats at Delton Community League, just a block away from Delton School.

It’s a simple gesture – coffee, treats, and a welcoming space – but for some busy parents, it may be a much-needed break from the hustle and bustle of life.
“Connection is important,” says Gurnett. “It makes Delton a more lovely place to live.”
This isn’t your typical parent-tot group – it’s a space for parents and caregivers to enjoy some playtime of their own. While children are welcome, the program encourages adults to attend on their own and take a well-deserved break.
“I think it’s really important for you to know your neighbours and to know families in the local area,” Gurnett says.
As a young parent, Gurnett found it difficult to find a strong community. At that time in her life, she had a different parent group to lean on.
“It was really quite life-changing just to have people in a similar stage of life to connect with,” she says.
Now, she wants to provide the same support to parents in the Delton area. Her hope is that parents can find some rest and community at Parent Connect.

“It’s easier to support each other when we know what’s going on for each other,” Gurnett adds.
Parent Connect started in mid-April and runs until June 16. The group is still in its pilot phase. Gurnett plans to continue the program into fall if attendance numbers rise and there is more community interest.
