City launches new Assisted Snow Removal Pilot Program
Program provides help for people who cannot shovel snow
In April 2024, Edmonton City Council approved a two-year pilot to assist in snow removal for approved low-income seniors and residents with disabilities and mobility challenges.
Homeowners are required to clear snow and ice off the sidewalks around their property or risk a $100 fine plus the cost of snow removal. Unfortunately, many homeowners are physically unable to do this task and seniors put themselves at risk for falls or other medical issues such as heart attacks.
"Edmonton winters can be challenging, particularly for seniors and individuals with mobility issues," says Chantel Perizzolo, Director of Complaints and Investigations with the city.
The pilot program will use contractors to clear snow from both the public sidewalk in front of theĀ property as well as the private walkways to the house at no charge to those residents approved for the program. Edmonton residents with permanent or temporary disabilities are eligible if there are no individuals residing in the household who can perform snow removal. Low-income seniors are eligible for snow removal assistance if they are over 65 years and have provided a Seniors Financial Assistance application to the Government of Alberta.
If you are already enrolled in DATS or the Assisted Waste Collection program, then you only need to complete an online enrolment form. If not, then you will also need to submit a signed authorized healthcare provider form as well. Senior residents can call 211 and press 2 for the Seniors Information Phone Line. An operator will guide you to find organizations supporting seniors in Edmonton.
If a spot in the pilot program is not available when you apply, you will automatically be added to a waitlist. This ensures you will be notified if a spot opens up.
The city is also partnering with community leagues to support community snow removal initiatives. If you can be a snow angel for others in the community or help organize winter kick-off events, contact your local community league.
Winter may be arriving later and bringing less snow than in previous years, but it still comes. In an ideal world, neighbours would take care of each other, especially vulnerable residents. Lending a helping hand in your community can make a big difference.
